Frequently asked questions on Bushinkai and the art of Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu

What is Bushinkai?
Bushinkai (warrior spirit school) is a martial arts academy dedicated to traditional Japanese, Chinese and Okinawan martial arts

Who runs the Academy?
Sifu David Keegan heads the Chinese martial arts and Kaicho Simon Keegan heads the Japanese/Okinawan martial arts

What is Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu?
Hakuda is a method of Jujutsu pioneered by Master Akiyama of Kyushu in the 17th century. It is a type of Jujutsu that emphasises strikes.
Toshu Jutsu (which can also be pronounced Karate Jutsu) was developed around the same time in Okinawa, off the coast of Kyushu
Hakuda Kempo Toshu Jutsu distills various methods of Toshu Jutsu and Hakuda into a single system

Is it for sport or self defence?
We don't do sport. We sometimes do sparring similar to that found in kickboxing or Judo but is simply a training aid not to win medals

How does it differ from Karate-do?
Karatedo generally just trains punches and kicks (Kihon) and engages in sport-orientated sparring (kumite) and trains the forms (kata) almost like a dance. In Toshu Jutsu we also train grappling techniques, pressure points, various weapons and drill our self defence responses using flowdrills

Is Bushinkai affiliated to any associations?
Businkai is affiliated to TEMAA, A founder member of the English Karate Federation

How long will it take me to get my black belt?
Progress in Bushinkai is slow and thorough. It is unlikely any student will reach black belt in less than five years. We have only awarded one black belt since 2001 and that was to a student who had trained since 1978...

I have already studied martial arts. Will I be welcome to study Toshu Jutsu?
Yes. Although many of our students arrived as beginners, some have already studied other martial arts including Karate, Jujutsu, Muay Thai, Tai Chi, Ninjutsu, Vale Tudo, Aikijujutsu and Taekwondo. Many practitioners of other arts find that Toshu Jutsu helps to teach aspects that were missing from their previous training

I am a Karate/Jujutsu instructor with my own existing class but I am interested in learning more about Toshu Jutsu and maybe even becoming a Toshu Jutsu instructor. How can I go about this?
We have a TOSHU JUTSU KENYUKAI (Toshu Jutsu study group) which is open to other instructors who want to start incorporating the principles of Toshu Jutsu into their own art, and use Toshu Jutsu as a sort of "accessor pack" for their own syllabus. We recently taught Toshu Jutsu to a group of Aikijujutsu, Goju Ryu and Judo instructors who have now added some of our exercises to their curriculum.  Instructors who, in the fullness of time wish to teach Toshu Jutsu as their main art are given help and encouragement, but must of course reach the same standard as our in-house students. We will offer instructor's certificates in the art of Toshu Jutsu beginning with C5 Assistant Instructor, C4 Club Instructor, C3 Regional Instructor, C2 National Instructor, C1 International Instructor and SC1 Senior International Instructor

Why is it called "Toshu Jutsu" and not "Karate"?
The Japanese characters "To Shu" mean Chinese Hand and can be pronounced as follows:

"Kara Te" (Kunyomi pronunciation)
"To Te" (On/Kun yomi pronunciation)
"To Shu" (Onyumi pronunciation)

Other variations are as follows:
"Tang Te" (Specific 'Tang Dynasty' Chinese)
"Tang Shu" (Korean)

The modern Karate-Do does not use the "Chinese Hand" character but uses the Empty Hand character which can be pronounced:

"Kara Te" (Kunyomi pronunciation)
"Ku Te" (On/Kun yomi pronunciation
)
"Ku Shu" (Onyumi pronunciation)

We use the terminology To Shu Jutsu because this is the original Chinese Onyumi pronunciation of the word.

The second reason is to distance ourselves from sport Karate.

What do I need to start training?

Just come along in some loose fitting clothing. We will sort out your insurance and a club suit after a few lessons

Where are the clubs?
As you can see from our Classes page we have Toshu Jutsu in Manchester and Tai Chi in Ormskirk and Wigan. There are TEMAA-affiliated clubs all over the UK.
